In one sentence
Unlocks two extra body-contact tackle moves, loosens when a body-contact tackle may start, and lets his hits knock the ball carrier down regardless of the carrier's Physical Contact.
Who does this affect?
Both: tackle moves and contact reactions work the same whoever controls the players.
How it works
Power Tackle opens two body-contact tackle moves that are rejected without it and gives them extra reach. It loosens the start rules of the body-contact tackle on the ball carrier. Most important: when his shoulder tackle or slide hits the carrier from the side or from behind, the carrier falls — Physical Contact and Balance cannot prevent it. In lighter contacts the carrier's Physical Contact is ignored and only the force of the collision decides. He himself does not react to light contact while tackling.
When it applies
- Standing body-contact tackle on the ball carrier: two extra moves, looser start rules.
- His body-contact tackle or slide hits the carrier at least 45° away from where the carrier is facing (from the side or behind) while he faces the carrier: the carrier falls.
- Other light contacts during his tackle: the carrier's reaction depends only on how hard they collide, not on Physical Contact.
- He is always registered as the carrier's contact partner, so a Power Tackle contact always produces a reaction.
Without it
Two tackle moves are never chosen. The body-contact tackle needs a bigger angle between the two players and the target further off his line. In a light contact the carrier's reaction comes from the Physical Contact comparison, which at most staggers him and with similar or better Physical Contact can cancel the reaction.
Which stats it reads
Physical Contact (ball carrier) compared with opponentNormally, in a light contact the carrier compares his Physical Contact with the tackler's. Depending on the kind of contact he either staggers (a stronger reaction if he is 11+ points weaker), or he does not react at all unless the tackler is 10+ points stronger. This comparison never makes him fall. Against a Power Tackle hit it is skipped.
Tackling sets how strongThe skill's tackle moves add 2.0 to a reach value that is usually 4 plus up to 1.0 from Tackling 40 to 99 (and another 0.33 from 99 to 120). At full sprint (30 km/h and up) all of it shrinks to a fifth.
Common questions
Does Power Tackle allow tackling head-on?
Short answerPartly
It allows body-contact tackles from straighter lines, but not face to face.
Can a strong dribbler shrug off a Power Tackle with high Physical Contact?
Short answerNo
When the Power Tackle hit lands, the carrier's Physical Contact is not used for his reaction.
Does high Balance stop the fall?
Short answerNo
Balance only shortens a stagger; falls are not affected by it.
Does it give a foul-free tackle?
Short answerNo
The referee judges every tackle the same way and reads no skills.
Not yet confirmed
- Which in-game animations the two unlocked tackle moves are.
- The guaranteed fall also needs the carrier to be in one of two contact states (one of them is when the tackler has just taken the ball); these states are not fully decoded.
- The unit of the tackle reach value and that the 22–30 speed range is in km/h.
- Exactly how the collision force is measured in the lighter-contact case (closing speed and contact depth with thresholds around 20 and 28).
The maths
DetailNew move: two body-contact tackle moves exist only with the skill.
DetailStart rules: no minimum angle between the two players' facings (11.25° without the skill); his run may be up to 45° off his facing (33.75° without); the carrier may be as close as 0.4 m to his line ahead (0.7 m without).
DetailNot head-on: the two players' facings must still be 112.5° or less apart.
DetailHit from the side or behind (45° or more off the carrier's facing): the carrier gets the strongest reaction level, which is a fall.
DetailHis slides count as body-contact tackles here too, so the knock-down rule also applies to them.
DetailNot used by this skill: Balance (ball carrier) — Balance only shortens staggers; a fall is not affected.; Physical Contact (tackler) — not needed for the knock-down.
