Phenomenal Finishing

Better actionChecked
In one sentence
Shots from awkward body positions are aimed as if Finishing were 7 higher, lose much less speed to the awkward posture, and awkward-contact mishits become far rarer on almost every shot he takes.

Who does this affect?

Both: everything runs in the kick code for the player you control and for CPU players. CPU players with the skill are also chosen more as cross targets and try shots on high balls from any body angle.

How it works

The game first checks whether a shot is unorthodox: an acrobatic kick, an awkward contact, an unusual version of a kick, a reverse or outside-foot strike, or one of eight special shooting animations. Headers and heel kicks never count. If it is, the skill adds 7 to Finishing in the aiming calculation (instead of any +5 from another skill), cuts the speed lost to the awkward posture by 30–55 %, and makes the speed and height errors of awkward contacts much smaller. Separately, on every non-acrobatic shot he takes, awkward-contact mishits are cut to a fifth.

When it applies

Without it

Unorthodox shots use plain Finishing (or a +5 from another skill), lose the full posture speed, keep the large speed and height errors of awkward contacts and the full mishit chances.

Which stats it reads

Finishing raised by the skill
Unorthodox shots aim as if Finishing were 7 higher. Biggest effect from 60 to 82, a bit less than half from 90 up; not wasted at 99 because the +7 is added inside the shot after the 99 cap.

Common questions

Does Phenomenal Finishing add shot power?
Short answerPartly
Only by losing less speed to an awkward posture; a clean shot is not faster.
Does it stack with Acrobatic Finishing's +5?
Short answerNo
The +7 replaces the +5, but their mishit reductions do combine.
Is the +7 wasted at Finishing 99?
Short answerNo
It is added inside the shot calculation, so it still helps at 99, just less.
Does it help headers?
Short answerNo
Headers and heel kicks never count as unorthodox.

Not yet confirmed

  • How often ordinary open-play shots count as unorthodox (awkward contact or unusual kick version) is not known, so how often the +7 fires in a match is unclear.
  • What the posture types behind the 0.45–0.7 speed-loss factors look like has not been identified.

The maths

DetailReplaces, does not add: the +7 is used instead of any +5 (Long-range Curler, Knuckle Shot, Rising Shot, Chip Shot Control, Dipping Shot, Long-range Shooting, Acrobatic Finishing) or Visionary Pass's +6.
DetailAwkward-contact mishits are cut to 20 % on every non-acrobatic shot he takes, the strongest mishit reduction among shooting skills.
DetailSpeed lost to an awkward posture is multiplied by 0.45–0.7 depending on the posture.
DetailAwkward contacts: the speed and height part of the aiming error is weighted 0.8 instead of 0.3 of the clean value.
BendThe +7 is worth most for Finishing 60–82 and a bit less than half as much from 90 up.
DetailNot used by this skill: Kicking Power — the extra pace is speed not lost to posture; Kicking Power is not read by the skill.; Weak Foot Accuracy — the normal weak-foot penalty applies after the +7.
