Dipping Shot

New moveChecked
In one sentence
A Stunning Shot at 20–50 % power with his stronger foot becomes a dipping shot: it leaves at a steeper angle, usually with heavy topspin, and is aimed as if Finishing were 5 higher. On Stunning free kicks it adds topspin.

Who does this affect?

Both: the dipping animation and the free-kick topspin are chosen in the kick code for the player you control and for CPU players. CPU players with the skill also pick power levels that allow a dipping shot.

How it works

In open play the skill lets the game pick a dipping-shot animation that other players never use. That shot is launched up to 4° steeper (10° in one form of the animation), gets heavy topspin in that form (about 5 on the game's spin scale, against roughly zero for an ordinary strike), and aims as if Finishing were 5 higher. On direct free kicks taken with the Stunning style, the ball gets topspin of 2 to 3 (more from closer) instead of the tiny random spin those free kicks normally have.

When it applies

Without it

The same input gives an ordinary Stunning Shot: normal launch, normal spin, plain Finishing. Stunning free kicks get only a tiny random spin.

Which stats it reads

Finishing raised by the skill
The dipping shot aims as if Finishing were 5 higher. Biggest effect from 60 to 85, about half from 90 up; not wasted at 99 because the +5 is added inside the shot after the 99 cap.
Weak Foot Accuracy decides if it happens
With the weaker foot the dipping shot only happens at the top Weak Foot Accuracy level.

In numbers

Free-kick topspin from Dipping ShotTopspin (game's spin scale) given to a Stunning-style direct free kick, by distance from goal. Without the skill: about 0 (random ±0.1).

Common questions

Do Curl or Kicking Power make the dip stronger?
Short answerNo
The dipping topspin and the extra launch angle are fixed numbers; no stat is read.
Does it work on Controlled Shots?
Short answerNo
Stunning Shots only.
Does it work with the weak foot?
Short answerPartly
Only with Weak Foot Accuracy at its top level.
Can a player have both Dipping Shot and Low Screamer working?
Short answerNo
Low Screamer always wins under 50 % power, so the dipping shot is never chosen.
Does the ball really fly differently?
Short answerYes
It is launched up to 4–10° steeper and, in one form of the animation, gets heavy topspin.

Not yet confirmed

  • The dipping animation has two forms; which one is used when was not traced. Only one form gets the heavy topspin (the other uses the ordinary spin) and the bigger 10° extra launch.
  • The extra launch is read as degrees from the angle calculation.
  • Which free-kick style is meant, and that the free-kick branch is the Stunning style, were read from the code, not seen in a match.

The maths

ConditionPower bar 20–50 % and his stronger foot; never on Controlled Shots.
DetailLaunch: up to 4° steeper (10° in the topspin form of the animation). The extra angle is a little smaller only for close, harder strikes (under 15 m and above 40 % power).
DetailLow Screamer blocks it: with both skills, the under-50 % Stunning Shot is always a Low Screamer.
DetailFree kicks: topspin 3 point-blank, 2.5 at 10 m, 2 from 20 m on. Owning Knuckle Shot as well cancels it in most positions.
DetailOne +5 per shot: it does not stack with other +5 shot skills; Phenomenal Finishing's +7 replaces it.
DetailNot used by this skill: Curl — the dipping topspin is a fixed amount; no stat changes how much the ball dips.; Kicking Power — not read by the dipping code.
