High Line Master

DefenceStill being reviewed
In one sentence
A back-line defender who is not allowed to drop as deep: the computer sets his depth limit 5 m behind the team's reference line instead of 6 m, and treats him differently in two line checks. No stat effect.

Who does this affect?

Only while the computer controls him (a computer-run team-mate or an opponent). Found on: Compatible positions in the code: CB, LB, RB. No card in the card data we have carries it yet (the game marks it as released).

How it works

In the team-shape code that places a back-line defender, the computer works out how far behind a team reference line he may drop: 6 m normally, 5 m for a High Line Master (the same as the unreleased Tough Marker; Deep Defender gets 7 m). When he has an opponent assigned to him, a further check uses tighter limits for him (−1 m instead of −5 m, and 25 m instead of 35 m). Two more line checks read the style; in one of them his tolerance for the gap between two opponents is 1 m larger. How often these checks change his position in a match was not measured.

When it applies

Without it

A back-line defender without the style may drop 6 m behind the reference line, and the two extra checks use the normal limits.

Common questions

Does High Line Master keep the defensive line higher?
Short answerPartly
His own depth limit is 1 m less deep than other defenders'; the code does not move the whole team's line by a set amount for him.
Does he play an offside trap?
Short answerNo
No code that reads the style starts an offside-trap move; the checks only change depth and tolerance limits.

The maths

ConditionOnly at CB, LB or RB.
StepDepth limit behind the team reference line: 5 m for him, 6 m for others (Tough Marker 5 m, Deep Defender 7 m; 3 m in one special case for everyone; 11 m under one team instruction).
StepWith an opponent assigned to him: a position check uses −1 m instead of −5 m and a distance limit of 25 m instead of 35 m.
StepIn a check on the gap between two opponents he gets a 1 m larger tolerance (−0.5 m instead of −1.5 m).
DetailOne further check stores the style for a later step; that step was followed only to the point of the checks above.
DetailNot used by this style: Defensive Awareness, Speed and Stamina are not read by the style's checks.; No stat is raised by the style.
