Build Up

DefenceStill being reviewed
In one sentence
A centre-back who looks for long balls more often (+0.2 on the computer's long-ball tendency, at any position) and whose Goal Poacher team-mates become run options from much further away while he has the ball. He may also push up out of the back line in build-up.

Who does this affect?

Only while the computer controls him (computer-run team-mate or opponent). The long-ball tendency is a computer ball-carrier decision; it does not change your own passes. Found on: Compatible position in the code: CB only. On cards: 2,099 centre-backs in the mobile card data.

How it works

When the computer has the ball at his feet, its tendency to play a long ball is 0.5 × his Lofted Pass progress from 70 to 90, plus 0.2 for Build Up (also for Orchestrator and Creative Playmaker), with a floor of 0.3 or 0.5 under two of the team's settings (which in-game settings these are was not mapped); the style counts in any position. While a Build Up centre-back has the ball, every Goal Poacher team-mate is put on a list that lets the computer consider him for a forward run from up to 35 m away (others 15–26 m). When the ball is more than 7.5 m ahead of the back line and at least three defenders are in it, the front of his area may go 15 m beyond a reference line instead of 10 m.

When it applies

Without it

A centre-back without the style has a long-ball tendency of 0.5 × Lofted Pass progress (floor 0.3), no Goal Poacher list, and a 10 m forward limit in that build-up rule.

Which stats it reads

Lofted Pass sets how strong
The long-ball tendency climbs from 0 at Lofted Pass 70 to 0.5 at 90; Build Up adds 0.2. Where the 0.3 floor applies, the style changes nothing below Lofted Pass 74. Above 90 nothing more is gained.

In numbers

Long-ball tendencyComputer ball-carrier tendency to choose a long ball (compared with a random draw); y = without the style, y2 = Build Up. Drawn with the 0.3 floor that applies under one team setting.

Common questions

Does Build Up improve his passing accuracy?
Short answerNo
No pass-accuracy code reads the style; it changes how often the computer chooses a long ball.
Does it help Goal Poachers?
Short answerYes
While he has the ball, Goal Poachers can be picked for runs from up to 35 m away.

The maths

BendLong-ball tendency = max(0.5 × ramp(Lofted Pass, 70 → 90) + 0.2 for the style (+0.3 for the AI style Long Ball Expert), floor). Floor 0.3 under one team setting, 0.5 under another, none otherwise.
ConditionGoal Poacher list: only while he (in a CB position) has the ball; each Goal Poacher in a compatible position is listed.
StepA listed Goal Poacher can be considered for a forward run from up to 35 m away (normally 15–26 m; Goal Poachers at least 25 m).
ConditionStepping out: ball more than 7.5 m ahead of the team's back line, three or more players in the back line, and he is at one end of it.
StepWhen stepping out, the front of his area may reach 15 m past a reference line instead of 10 m.
DetailWhen he has the ball, one of the computer's run options for a midfielder is skipped.
DetailHe is also left out of one extra evaluation step in the computer's on-ball decisions (with Anchor Man, Fox in the Box, The Destroyer, Defensive Full-back).
DetailNot used by this style: Low Pass and Kicking Power are not read by the style's checks.; No stat is raised by the style.
